WORKING GROUPS OF THE 1394 TRADE ASSOCIATION
The 1394 Trade Association assists in the activities of the following working groups. In addition to quarterly face-to-face meetings and off-cycle meetings and conference calls, each working group also has an email-based discussion list.
The privilege of participating in these activities is generally reserved for members, but we welcome inquiries from parties interested in learning more. Please feel free to contact Tina Lipscomb to find out how you can get involved in the planning and development of future 1394-based specifications and applications.
Architecture:
Chair - Don Harwood, Oxford Semiconductor
Vice-Chair - Duncan Beadnell, Oxford Semiconductor
The Architecture working group and its reflector provide a general
forum for the discussion of Serial Bus issues whose solution requires
cooperative agreement on common architectural definitions. Self-contained
applications usually fall within the scope of other 1394 Trade Association
working groups. Some of its functions are to disseminate information (by
way of technical bulletins and presentations), to educate members about
Serial Bus (by way of topical presentations and liaison reports) and to
promote interdisciplinary exchanges of information. The working group
is also an incubator for the early development of consensus before projects
are launched within accredited standards organizations.
A/V and Pro Audio Working Group:
Chair - Morten Lave, TC Applied Technologies
The charter of the A/V and Pro Audio Working Group is to develop command sets, control protocols and digital transmission formats for consumer use of 1394 in applications such as digital camcorders, digital set top boxes, digital TVs, audio and music devices, and others.
The A/V and Pro-Audio working group also provides a way for professional audio companies to ensure that their needs and requirements are considered when new 1394 standards are created, and existing 1394 standards are adapted or modified. It provides a discussion forum for Professional Audio companies developing products using 1394. Work includes the development of use cases for the application of 1394 in areas such as recording, installed sound systems, and touring/live sound systems, and compliance procedures and requirements for ensuring interoperability within such applications. Further development work is then recommended to the Board of the 1394TA to be completed by the A/V and Pro Audio Working Group and/or other groups as appropriate.
Automotive:
Chair - Max Bassler, Littelfuse
The Automotive Working Group works with automotive industry leaders to leverage the existing IEEE 1394 industry standard, define
requirements supporting vehicle passenger compartment operation, provide
S400 bit rate nominal, support non-safety critical vehicle functions and
services including, but not limited to, Multi-media and Telematics applications,
define automotive grade Plastic Optical Fiber physical layer requirements
(including transceiver, connector, and cable) for automotive OEM installed
components, define automotive grade twisted-pair physical layer requirements
(including connector and cable) for connecting aftermarket consumer electronic
devices, work in conjunction with the Cable & Connector Working Group
to develop the connector and cable specifications, define automotive specific
message set (protocol), and work together with the automotive OEMs to
ensure deliverables are satisfactorily met.
Cables and Connectors:
Chair - Max Bassler, Littelfuse
The Cables and Connectors Working Group assembles a group of connector
industry experts under the 1394TA organization to help implement 1394
technology. This includes specifically matters of connectors, cables and
mechanical packaging. This Working Group (CCWG) may publish its own specifications
or technical bulletins under the rules of the Trade Association or may
feed other standards bodies promoting 1394 technology. Following the 1394TA
Bylaws, the CC WG will honor the American National Standards Institute
(ANSI) Patent Policy and related ANSI copyright policy.
Compliance and Interoperability:
Chair - Richard Mourn, Quantum Parametrics
The Compliance and Interoperability working group functions to promote,
educate and lead the 1394 industry to consistency of conformance and interoperability.
The working group is responsible for developing certain test specifications
that are not clearly owned by other 1394TA working groups.
Industrial and Instrumentation:
Chair: Dimitris Staikos, CodeMost
The Industrial and Instrumentation working group functions to promote industrial applications of 1394 by ensuring that industrial vendors have all the information required to successfully apply 1394 technology. We encourage development of systems that are easy to diagnose and troubleshoot. The focus is on machine vision applications and automation. The working group is responsible for the development of respective specifications, mainly for application-specific protocols of industrial 1394 products and for contributing to the development of the IIDC 2.0 standard.
Marketing:

The 1394 Trade Association Marketing Working Group was created to advance
the adoption of 1394. Activities include promotion to OEMs, Suppliers,
and End Users. The Marketing Working Group promotes the 1394 Trade Association,
its standards and activities as well as the benefits of the 1394 technology
and the products/services of its member companies. Activities include
trade show participation, contributed articles, press/analyst tours, promotional
materials, seminars, and technology evangelism to targeted companies or
industries.
Residential Backbone:
Chair: Les Baxter, Baxter Enterprises
Vice Chair: Hans Van der ven, AV Connections
The Residential Backbone Working Group is working to define a media-agnostic IEEE 1394 architecture and guidelines for residential infrastructure so that electronic devices using the various media (UTP, POF, coax, wireless, etc.) can interoperate.
Silicon:
Chair: Toni Ray, Texas Instruments
Vice Chair: Les Baxter, Baxter Enterprises
The Silicon Working Group addresses issues relating to hardware implementation of IEEE 1394 specifications. This includes PHY and Link chip design issues, FireWire port design, reliability, jitter, etc. SiWG activities include developing design guidelines; jitter specifications; documenting errata; analyzing field problems; developing specifications for long haul media such as coax, UTP, and fiber; and investigating future enhancements such as higher-speed operation.
VersaPHY:
Chair: Richard Mourn, Quantum Parametrics
The VersaPHY working group charter is to promote the adoption of the exciting VersaPHY extension to the IEEE-1394 Standard through the development of profiles and test specifications. In addition, the working group will develop the marketing strategy for the technology and promote the strategy to the 1394 Trade Association's Marketing Working Group. VersaPHY is a 100% compatible extension to IEEE-1394 and enables a new class of lower-cost 1394 devices. VersaPHY packet structure, addressing, and registers allow simple devices to connect to the IEEE-1394 bus simply and more cost effectively while still supporting both isochronous and asynchronous streams. Therefore the profiles targeted for development generally focus on these key areas where VersaPHY excels; cheap, simple, and if needed supports isochronous and/or asynchronous streams.
Wireless:
The Wireless working group develops standards facilitating the interconnection between IEEE 1394 (wired) domains and wireless domains for electronic equipment such as A/V and PCs. A variety of wireless technologies are considered based on market demand and suitability for high bandwidth applications.
Additionally, the use of wireless technologies for the transmission of the 1394 protocol over Coaxial cable is being defined. Both Ultra- wideband and baseband technologies are utilized.

MISSION
The 1394 Trade Association actively promotes
the proliferation of the IEEE 1394 Serial Bus standard technology into
the computer, consumer, peripheral, and industrial markets to enable a
truly interoperable, standardized, universal I/O and back plane interconnect.
The 1394 TA provides members the opportunity
to achieve this mission. We organize and hold Quarterly Meetings and Developer's
Conferences, and attend Tradeshows and related seminars as a means by
which the members can work together on the use of IEEE 1394 to expand
all target markets
