Apple in mid June introduced its latest Mac mini, an environmentally friendly, 1394b-equipped, lightweight (3 pounds) Mac for video, 3D games, photos and other applications.
The newest Mac mini is packaged in an all-aluminum, unibody enclosure originally developed for the MacBook Pro. The power supply is built in, so no power brick is needed, and when idle, it uses under 10 W, a 25 percent reduction from prior versions, and a low idle power requirement that no other PC can achieve. The [rocessor speed is 2.66 GHz, with up to *GB of memory. Mac mini makes it easy to hook up to an HDTV or digital display using the HDMI port and Mini DisplayPort. It also has a built-in SD card slot so users can grab photos and videos from a digital still or video camera. Although the new Mac mini is ultracompact, there’s no shortage of ports including 1394b, built-in WiFi, and an HDMI port. The Mac mini also includes an NVIDIA GeForce 320M graphics processor with 256MB of DDR3 SDRAM shared with main memory and Mini DisplayPort with support for up to 2560-by-1600 resolution. Some versions come with the Snow Leopard server preinstalled. Pricing starts under $700.
The Industrial Automation Group of Advantech in Taiwan has introduced a new fanless embedded automation computer – the UNO-3084 -- with front-accessible I/O design and two 1394b interfaces for vision inspection devices. It features an Intel® Core(TM)2 Duo L7500 1.6 GHz processor, 2GB DDRII RAM, an Intel GMA X3100 graphics engine, dual DVI-I ports with support for up to 3 displays, 2 x RS-232/422/485 ports with automatic flow control, and 2 x 10/100/1000 Base-T RJ-45 ports with teaming function support. UNO-3084 can deal with tremendous data volumes under highly demanding environments, delivering reliable 3D operation for machine vision applications or any industrial automation task requiring high processing capabilities. UNO-3084 features a robust design with power isolation and thermal resistant solutions achieved through special power circuits that keep the system ground apart from the chassis ground. UNO-3084 is designed with strict thermal testing criteria, ensuring the system will operate at a stable temperature, even when the CPU is under 100 percent load. Pricing starts at approximately $2,400.
Hewlett Packard has introduced an all-in-one 1394-equipped PC for at the corporate marketplace. The Compaq 6000 Pro All-in-One Business PC comes with a choice of Core 2 Duo CPUs, Windows 7 Professional 32/64 bit, capacity for 8GB of DDR3 memory, storage space of up to one terabyte, and options to fit an 80GB solid state drive. The machine also comes with a 16X optical drive, a slim tray DVD burner, seven USB ports and a1394 FireWire port, as well as a six in one memory card reader. The screen is a 21.5-inch diagonal HD LED backlit LCD screen and has dual display capability. The PC also comes standard with a full version of the HP SkyRoom videoconferencing collaboration tool – a $100 value – and is Microsoft® Office Communicator certified. A trial version of HP Virtual Rooms also is available for interactive and easy face-to-face video chat. Pricing starts at $899.
The Western Digital My Passport Studio is one of the newest and most versatile pocket-sized external hard drives, offering both FireWire 400, FireWire 800, along with USB 2.0 connections. It includes up to 640GB of storage and an electronic label that works even when the drive is unplugged. The 640GB My Passport Studio is priced at $200. The drive also comes in smaller capacities, 500GB and 320GB, which cost around $180 and $150, respectively.
Western Digital, the second largest computer hard disk drives manufacturer, also introduced its My Book Studio LX external hard drive for Apple iMac, G5 and MacBook Pro. The new hard drive offers a FireWire 800 interface and features a sleek aluminum case. Its customizable e-label lets users personalize media collections and identify critical information about the drive, such as the contents and remaining capacity without connecting the hard drive to a computer. My Book Studio LX drives offer automatic, continuous backup through WD SmartWare software and also sync seamlessly with Apple Time Machine software. My Book Studio LX drives are formatted for Mac and come in capacities of 1 TB (WDBACH0010HAL) and 2 TB (WDBACH0020HAL) at prices of $199 and $279, respectively.
Data storage specialist Iomega, an EMC company, has announced worldwide availability of a new generation of single-drive Iomega eGo portable and desktop hard drives equipped with FireWire. The new products include a compact model with capacities of up to 1TB, and new FireWire 800 Mac edition portable and desktop HDDs with up to 2TB of capacity. The new 1TB eGo BlackBelt Mac Edition Portable Hard Drive features dual FireWire 800 ports and one USB 2.0 port. The drive includes a backward compatible FireWire 800 to 400 cable, as well as Iomega's Drop Guard Xtreme, which helps protect the drive from accidental drops of up to 7ft. The Mac Edition eGo Desktop Hard Drive is available for $159 for the 1TB model and $250 for the 2TB model.

COMOSS Ltd of Taiwan is now providing a complete range of 1394b cables and connector products designed for industrial cameras and similar applications. New products include a 1394b FireWire S800 Beta Right Angle cable and connector die cast along with a jackscrews type, and a 1394b coax extension cable. COMOSS’ die cast and jackscrews type provides the best EMI suppression and a very robust connection.
The COMOSS 1394b R/A cable enables easy connectivity for all industrial and consumer product applications. The 1394b coax cable extension dongle enables 1394b signal transmission to distances as long as 70 meters. The company also has developed a 1394b extension cable, with transmission capabilities to 30 meters and 70 meters.
GIGABYTE has announced its newest 1394-equipped motherboard. The GIGABYTE P55A-UD6 board was implemented using the Intel P55 chipset, enabling it to support the following technologies innately: Intel LGA 1156 Core i7, Core i5, and Core i3 processors, DDR3 memory operating in Dual Channel mode up to 1333MHz officially, and either NVIDIA SLI and ATI CrossFireX graphics mode using matching video cards. GIGABYTE integrated the following devices in to the P55A-UD6: six SATA II ports on the Intel P55 controller (RAID 0, 1, 0+1, 5 capable); and three 1394 ports including two in the rear panel, and an onboard header supporting a port each. Also on the P55A board is aRealtek 8-channel HD audio codec with integrated S/PDIF optical and RCA component output ports; integrated power, reset, and CMOS reset buttons; onboard 2-digit diagnostic LED; and a PS/2 keyboard/mouse port in the rear panel. Priced at about $250.
ASUS has introduced its 1394-equipped P6X58D Premium, which is aimed at enthusiasts, gamers and benchmarkers. The X58 chipset-based P6X58D Premium boosted the triple channel DDR3 to 2333MHz together with an Intel Core i7-980X processor and Kingston HyperX® triple-channel DDR3 memory. Designed for outstanding performance, P6X58D Premium motherboards have proven themselves able to support triple channel DDR3 at 2333MHz, certified using Intel XMP, or Extreme Memory Profile -- the strictest memory testing standard in the industry, ASUS claims. It is designed for dedicated gamers and overclockers, as well as general audiences. Priced at approximately $600.
